An Encrypted Connection To Your Mail Server Is Not Available

The Outlook email client helps you access your email account on your computer. For this, you must configure your email account on Outlook. This is a simple job to do with. Launch Outlook on your computer, go to the File menu, click Info, select the option to add a new email account, type your name, email address, and password. That’s it; the Outlook email client will establish the connection to your email server and configure your email account on it. But what if you see an error message stating “An encrypted connection to your mail server is not available".

Click Next to attempt using an unencrypted connection.” This error message usually appears while adding a new email account in the Outlook email client, and the reason for this error is when the Exchange Server used by Outlook is of an older version. Another reason is when the auto-discover of Outlook fails due to the non-availability of the records of the email account in the DNS server.


There are two major solutions that could usually clear this error and let you add a new email account in the Outlook email client.

  • solution 1:Add the email account manually.
  • solution 2:Update the Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Office 365 email client.

Both these solutions are discussed in detail in the below section.

Add The Email Account Manually:

Since the auto-discover functionality of Outlook was not able to identify your email account, it threw the error message. So add your email account manually by carrying out the steps given below.

  • Step 1: Click the Back button on the error message window.
  • Step 2: It will take you back to the Add Account Setup window. Here, click the Manual setup or additional server types option at the bottom and click the Next button.
  • Step 3: In the next window, select the type of email account you wish to set up. (IMAP, POP, Exchange Server, etc.)
  • Step 4: Click the Next button and go to the next window.
  • Step 5: Now, prior to entering the details, make sure of the incoming and outgoing server of your email account, and their port numbers. You can get the server details from your Email Service Provider and to solve encrypted connection to your mail server is not available.
  • Step 6: Enter your name, email address, password, incoming and outgoing mail servers, in the respective fields, and then click the More Settings button.
  • Step 7: Switch to the Outgoing Server tab and enable the checkbox near the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication option. Also, click the Use same settings as my incoming mail server radio button.
  • Step 8: Now, go to the Advanced tab in the Internet E-mail Settings window. Enter the Server Port Numbers for both the incoming and outgoing mail servers, and set their encryption type.
  • Step 9: Click OK, following that click the Next button. Outlook will now again try to connect to your email server, and when completed, your email account will be added to the Outlook email account. In case if Outlook faces issues while connecting to your email account, make sure you have enabled the IMAP or POP forwarding option, and have allowed access for less secure apps in your email account.

Update or Repair The Email Client:

To solve the issue mentioned at the beginning of this article, follow the steps given below and repair or update your email client on a Windows computer.

  • Step 1: Close the Outlook email client on your computer if it is open.
  • Step 2: Go to the Control Panel window on your computer and select the Programs and Features option.
  • Step 3: Now, locate the Microsoft Office 365 or Outlook from the list of programs. Click on the program and click the Uninstall / Change button.
  • Step 4: In the pop-up window, select the option to repair the program.
  • Step 5: Follow the on-screen instruction in the wizard and restart your computer when completed.
  • Step 6: Now after solving encrypted connection to your mail server is not available, launch the Outlook email client and add your email account without facing any error.
