IMAP error reported by server

The IMAP errors occur when there is an issue with the incoming mails or mail syncing. Some of the common IMAP errors are:

  • Step 1:“Error connecting to mail server” which occurs when the IMAP server could not connect to the email account.
  • Step 2:When the IMAP server connection becomes disconnected, the error “IMAP connection broken” appears.
  • Step 3:“IMAP: Connection Closed” shows up when the IMAP connection is not authenticated, so the connection ended.
  • Step 4:The error “There was an issue with your IMAP settings” can occur when the IMAP server settings are wrong, and thus a proper connection cannot be established.
  • Step 6:“Authentication failed” error can be seen when an incorrect username or password is used to access the mail account.

  • Step 1:Check if the IMAP server is turned on and the IMAP server configuration settings are correct.
  • Step 2:The antivirus on the device might be blocking the IMAP service. Disable the antivirus program temporarily.

Sometimes, when you log in to your mail account, you can get this error. Attempt these measures to fix the error.

  • Step 1:The configuration settings of the IMAP server may be incorrect. So check the server settings using the commands “telnet localhost 143”.
  • Step 2:When you have a multiple number of client connections, the mail server can drop off the connection.
  • Step 3:If you are using the Dovecot software for IMAP service, the corrupted index can cause the connection to decline. Try to restore the index files to handle this error.

The error can occur when you try to send emails; the SMTP server could not connect to the client account. To fix the issue, try these steps:

  • Step 1:Verify the SMTP server settings such as server name, port number, and authentication type.
  • Step 2:The virus or malware present on your device might be blocking the emails from sending. Scan the device using a virus scanner or perform a system scan and remove the malware.
  • Step 3:The Firewall can prevent the server from operating, so disable the firewall settings when you are sending emails.
  • Step 4:When the system registry contains any corrupted file, repair the registry of the device.
  • Step 5:Remove the temporary and junk files on the system and check if the error has been cleared.

Error connecting to imap server localhost

  • Step 1:Check if the IMAP server is operating or not. You can execute this by following the steps below.
  • Step 2:You need to open the terminal and enter the command “telnet localhost 143”.
  • Step 3:If the IMAP server is operating properly, you can see a set of responses.
  • Step 4:If the IMAP server has stopped running, an error message can be seen.
  • Step 5:Log in to your telnet services by entering the below command.

  • Step 5:Now, type the command “ps ax | grep courier” and wait for the response.
  • Step 5:If there is no response, type the command “service courier-imap start” to start the IMAP service.
  • Step 5:Check if there are any start-up errors on the device by typing the commands

  • Step 1:Still, if you get an error message, then replace the current configuration with the default configuration. Before that, back up the current configuration.

Default : /etc/courier-imap/imapd.dist

Restart the courier-imap service.

  • Step 1:Verify whether the IMAP server port number is set to 143.
  • Step 2:See if the firewall is blocking the IMAP server function. If so, turn off the firewall temporarily and check if the issue resolves.
  • Step 3:Install Dovecot, the mail delivery software, and configure the settings such that the IMAP protocol can be enabled when the server software is started.
